Welcome, space enthusiasts! The Intrepid Museum’s latest and largest temporary exhibition, Apollo: When We Went to the Moon, developed by the U.S. Space & Rocket Center and Flying Fish, explores the achievements and challenges of the Apollo program during a turbulent period in history.
Visitors are transported back to the fervent days of the Space Race as they enter the exhibition. The immersive sounds and sights highlight the efforts and breakthroughs culminating in Apollo 11's successful Moon landing. Beyond technical marvels, the exhibition provides insight into the cultural and political climates of the time, including the Civil Rights Movement, the Vietnam War and the global euphoria following the Moon landing. The exhibit connects Apollo's milestones to modern space endeavors, such as the International Space Station, the Apollo-Soyuz mission and the shuttle program, encouraging visitors to contemplate the future with the Artemis program.
Among the exhibit's treasures, and my favorite artifacts, are the authentic hand casts of Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins, used to craft perfectly fitting spacesuit gloves. A unique detail, Michael Collins’ cast includes an imprint of his wedding band. Interactive displays enhance the experience, allowing guests to feel the power of a Saturn V launch, touch a lunar meteorite, leave moon boot prints on an interactive moon surface floor, and sit in a full-size lunar rover.
Staged under the space shuttle Enterprise, Apollo: When We Went to the Moon complements our story of human perseverance and innovation. It underscores the relentless drive to excel in space exploration, which has propelled the U.S. from the Mercury and Gemini projects to the Apollo missions and into the shuttle era.
