In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Intrepid Museum is proud to highlight trailblazing figures in science with a series of inspiring events. Among the standouts is a special panel featuring Sidney M. Gutierrez, the first U.S.-born Hispanic astronaut, during NASA Explore Day on September 27.
NASA Explore Day – a part of the Museum’s AstroLive series – is designed to ignite curiosity, foster inclusivity and inspire future Latinx leaders in STEM. From 5:00pm–9:00pm ET, attendees can dive into the wonders of space, interact with pioneering astronauts and enjoy a fun-filled evening of exploration. Spanish translation will be provided throughout the event to ensure accessibility for all.
A Stellar Lineup of Astronauts
The evening’s panel will be a can't-miss event. Former NASA astronaut and author Tom Jones will discuss his latest book, Space Shuttle Stories: Firsthand Astronaut Accounts from All 135 Missions. He’ll be joined by fellow former astronauts Mike Massimino (Intrepid Museum Senior Space Advisor) and Gutierrez for an engaging conversation about their experiences in space. More details can be found here.
The Extraordinary Journey of Sidney M. Gutierrez
Gutierrez's story is especially meaningful for those from underrepresented communities in STEM. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering from the U.S. Air Force Academy, he logged over 4,500 flight hours as a test pilot for airframe and propulsion systems—flying everything from airplanes to rockets.
In 1984, Gutierrez made history when he was selected by NASA, becoming the first U.S.-born Hispanic astronaut. His first mission, as pilot of the Space Shuttle Columbia (STS-40), focused on how living organisms respond to microgravity—pioneering research that expanded our understanding of space biology.
But his accomplishments didn’t stop there. In 1994, he commanded the Space Shuttle Endeavour (STS-59) on a mission known as "Mission to Planet Earth," which gathered critical data that scientists continue to use today.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Today, Sidney M. Gutierrez is committed to expanding access to space, and ensuring its benefits are shared by all. His journey, from a young dreamer with a passion for the stars to a leader in the aerospace industry, serves as a beacon of possibility for the next generation of explorers. His legacy is not only marked by personal achievements but by his dedication to inspiring others to reach for the stars.
Don't miss this opportunity to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and be inspired by the incredible achievements of Sidney M. Gutierrez. Mark your calendar for September 27, and experience an evening of exploration, learning, and stargazing at NASA Explore Day.
