The Intrepid Museum mourns the loss of Edward T. Coyne, who passed away just shy of what would have been his 99th birthday. Ed was a beloved former crew member of USS Intrepid, serving proudly during World War II as a plank owner, part of its original crew, after joining the U.S. Navy at the age of 17.
Ed Coyne served as seaman on Intrepid and was assigned to the V2G gasoline division. His duties included manning fuel pumps and phones on the flight deck. Ed survived the Japanese kamikaze attacks on the ship in 1944.
He last returned to the ship in August 2023 for its 80th commissioning anniversary, saying, “When we looked up at it [Intrepid], we said it was awesome. Even after 80 years, it’s still awesome.”
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family. Ed will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
