Flip through your high school yearbook, and you’ll find a snapshot of what your classmates found important—people and events you remember fondly (and some you may rather forget). A cruise book is a Navy ship’s yearbook, designed by the crew for the crew. Each book covers one cruise or deployment. Portraits of crew members are grouped by department and division. Page after page of photos commemorate memorable moments on board.
In the Museum’s new exhibition Intrepid A to Z, the ship’s cruise books are on display for the first time. An interactive station will allow visitors to swipe through cruise books from the ship’s deployments and see the faces, comments and memories of the young men who served.
Objects like these cruise books offer a deeper glimpse into the personal experiences of the men on board the ship. Intrepid A to Z includes 25 more objects selected by former crew members, veterans and curators that reveal the ups and downs of serving on an aircraft carrier.
Opening on August 14, the exhibition is one way the Museum is celebrating the 75th anniversary of Intrepid’s commissioning. The celebration culminates on the weekend of August 16–19 with a full lineup of special events. Hundreds of crew members will return to the ship to commemorate the anniversary and share their stories with the public.
